The Vermillion Downtown Streetscape project was designed with the goal of revitalizing the downtown core, transforming it into a vibrant and welcoming destination that reflects the community’s spirit. Placemaking initiatives were at the heart of the project, focusing on creating an attractive and user-friendly environment that encourages people to linger, explore, and enjoy the unique character and businesses of downtown Vermillion. By incorporating inviting public spaces, the project sought to foster a sense of community and engagement among residents and visitors alike.

A deep respect for Vermillion’s history was evident in the design choices. Subtle historical references, such as the basketweave pavement pattern inspired by the brickwork of a historic building, were integrated into the streetscape. The Downtown Vermillion Monument Pillars also go beyond aesthetics, including the Lakota word for the area: Wasé Wakpa (valley of paint, painted valley; referring to the red clay of the river valley). This pays public tribute to the Native American people who make up a significant portion of the population.  Another design choice included the drum cadence for the University of South Dakota (USD) fight song being incorporated into the reliefs of the cast stone benches, connecting the strong university presence to the city. The project acknowledges the importance of Vermillion’s history and the people who shaped it.

Accessibility was another critical focus of the project. Efforts were made to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, could comfortably navigate the downtown area. This included the implementation of wide, smooth sidewalks and thoughtfully placed ramps, making it easier for all pedestrians to move around safely and independently.

Increasing pedestrian space and safety was also a priority. Elements such as bumpouts were introduced to expand pedestrian areas, providing a safer and more enjoyable experience for those on foot. Well-placed crosswalks helped to reduce traffic speeds and increase visibility, making it safer for people to cross the streets. These features not only enhanced safety by slowing down traffic but also created more room for outdoor dining, public seating, and other pedestrian-friendly activities. These improvements were also achieved without compromising the availability of downtown parking. The project successfully balanced the need for pedestrian-friendly spaces with the practical necessity of maintaining sufficient parking for visitors and residents.

Through this project, the Vermillion Downtown Streetscape project has transformed the downtown area into a more inviting, accessible, and functional space. By celebrating its historical roots while fostering a vibrant future, the project has created a downtown that is both a source of pride for the community and a destination for visitors.
